The CE mark enables the free movement of products into and within the EEA.

The implementation of this by the EU is a key indicator of a product's compliance with EU legislation. So, by placing a CE mark on a product the manufacturer is declaring, on their own responsibility, that the product conforms to all legal requirements attached to the achieving of a CE mark and therefore ensures validity for that product to be sold throughout the European Economic Area.

This, however, is not an indicator that a product was made on EEA soil but rather that the product was assessed before being placed in the market and satisfies all legal requirements. So, it not only includes products made in all 27 Member States of the EU, EFTA countries, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein but also in any other country worldwide.

As per AENOR's website, there are certain benefits that come with a CE marking:

For Manufacturers:

  • Allows for unrestricted access to the European market, avoiding technical barriers
  • It is also recognised by other global markets

For Consumers:

  • Ensures that the product is safe
  • Guarantees certain levels of safety, functionality, durability, energy-saving and environmental protection that are common throughout Europe
